Geologic Column

VIEWPOINT

If the location of a fossil in the "geologic column" defines its age, how does one explain the existence of fossilized tree trunks, and animals, whose fossils span layers that supposedly took millions of years to form?

FACT

The geologic column is a concept publicized by Charles Lyell in his Principles of Geology which appeared in 1830. The geologic column is defined by the National Parks Service at www.nps.gov/archive/maca/learnhome/cur_p_glo.htm as: A column representing the eras and periods of time with their major events and changing life forms. A good article can be found at http://creationwiki.org/Geological_column for a Creationist view or at http://www.grisda.org/origins/09028.htm for a non-Creationist view.

Canyons around Mount St. Helens

If you take a drive to the back side of Mount St. Helens in Washington state just off I-5, you can see some canyons that were formed during the eruption in 1980 and the few unstable days afterward by an enormous amount of pyroclastic material in at least 17 different flows. Though not as deep as the Grand Canyon, the appearance of these canyons are remarkably similar in appearance, including the stratification in the walls. How long did that take? Certainly not millions of years.

The Grand Canyon

The evolutionists say that it took a small amount of water (the Colorado River) millions of years to carve out the Grand Canyon. Creationists say that a tremendous amount of water (the Biblical Flood) did the job in just a year. Even the elevation of the surface of the earth between the source of the Colorado River and its mouth beg for an explanation (it is higher in spots that would require the river to flow uphill for some time to be able to cut its path).

A "scientific" explanation is proposed by those desperate to deny any supernatural explanation - the Earth surface heaved up at just the right speed and for the right period of time at some point in the past to allow for the unusual topography. However, any farmer with irrigation levees can tell you how fast a large amount of water can cut through a mound of dirt once the level reaches the top and begins to flow through a breach of its own making. Once the level of the flood water receded to a point of being trapped, rains caused the remaining water to climb steadily until path leads a way out of the area in which it is trapped. Once a small breach occurs in the earthen dam, as any farmer can tell you, the rest is history.
